How to collect phone numbers for WhatsApp marketing at Shopify's checkout
Step 1/6
- Log in to your store’s admin panel, then navigate to Settings → Checkout
- Locate the Customer contact method section, and select "Phone number or email", as shown in the screenshot below.

- Look for the Customer information section on the same page.
- Set Shipping address phone number to either "Required" or "Optional". We recommend choosing "Required" for best results.

- Locate the Marketing options section on the same page. Select all checkboxes as shown in the screenshot below.

- click "Save".

- On the same page, navigate to Customize sign-up labels, as shown in the screenshot below.

- On the page shown, locate the "Accept marketing checkout label" box:

- Update the text field in this box using one of the following suggestions:
• Get order updates & offers via WhatsApp
OR
• Sign up for order updates, exclusive offers, and news via WhatsApp and Email
OR
Write your own message - make sure to include any other channels you’re using.
For example, if you also use SMS, you could write: Get order updates & marketing offers via WhatsApp and/or SMS
- Click Save to apply your changes.
Step 6/6
- On the same page, use the search bar at the top and type "Phone".
- Locate the fields “Phone Label” and “Optional phone label”, and update both with the following text:
Phone number for orders, delivery & offer updates

This helps clearly communicate to customers what their phone number will be used for—especially if they choose to check out using only their email.
- Don’t forget to click Save in the top-right corner of the page when you're done!
